<img:stuff/2237_wiki_help_9y7vcgcflr5.jpg>

Theme: Tis the Season...

Like all the great contests here, this one has a particular theme so no posting photos of your great Aunt Ethel or the neighbour's dog. This time around we want to see MORE CREATIVITY! And we are going to be a lot more picky about what we want to see in the entries.

Its the time of year when folks all over the world get into the festive mood. Christmas lights appear on houses, manorahs are pulled out and cleaned and innocent trees are hacked down to be made into Yule logs (and Christmas trees). This time around we would like to see photos of what you feel best shows the Festive Season whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Yule! Of course, all photos must have a little explanation as to why this is a good representation of the season. ;)

Note:: Considering the magical feeling this time of year brings, the ET Photograph Competition will be accepting photomanipulations as well. Let's see all those Christmas sprites, fairies and elves hard at work people!

Rules:

1. NO STEALING PHOTOS! Photographs must be taken by Elftowners and posted here by the original photographer. Which means, no matter how much you might like a particular image on somebody's house, you are not allowed to add it here. This includes random images from the net too. TAKE YOUR OWN DARN PHOTOS DON'T STEAL THEM AND TRY TO CLAIM THEM AS YOUR OWN! That makes me angry, very angry indeed.

2. JUST ONE ENTRY THIS TIME. Sorry guys, just one entry this time around. You only get one chance at this one folks let's make it count!! Please put forth your best effort and the best quality, i.e. no coffe stained, faded Kodachrome photos from the 1960's. Any such entry will be removed. Please keep in mind that it is possible that a photograph has the same title as another one. This is not against the rules as long as the photographers' names are clear.

3. YES FOR PHOTOMANIPS! :D While this is a photograph based competition, we WILL be accepting photomanipulations for this particular contest. We want to see your photos of what best depicts the season and if you happen to catch an elf or sprite on film then let's see them! Please make sure that all material used for the manipulation is your own. Otherwise it will be removed for copyright infringement.

4. READ THE THEME! If you stick up a photo just because this is a photo competition, your entry will be removed without warning. ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT MEET THE THEME WILL BE REMOVED.

5. EXPLANATIONS ARE REQUIRED! We want to know why you think your photo is a good example of this festive season. Not only that but when and where the photo was taken is required as well.

6. SIZE LIMITATION: Since the chosen images will be featured on Main Street, all will be displayed at a maximum width of 300 pixels. If you would like to post the photo at the original size that's fine but please thumbnail it or ask someone to thumbnail it for you.

7. ALL IMAGES MUST BE UPLOADED TO ELFTOWN! Ask [Sunrose] for wiki-privs if you don't have them already: members who follow the uploading art rules and thus are not troublemakers, will be granted these privs. See advanced help for more information about privs.

8. SUBJECT MATTER: Since the winners will be featured on Mainstreet, images that depict graphic violence, pornography or other disturbing actions will not be accepted. Only photographs that fit the current theme will be allowed.

What will we be expecting? Creativity and lots of wonderful photos depicting this Festive season and possibly all the magical creatures that are associated with it.

Deadline:

December 31, 2005

How to post it here:
Add your image after the last one that has been already posted. Don't forget to write its title and your user name. For example:

13. [Fizban] "7 ornaments a crunching"
<img300*0:stuff/C%3ADocuments%20and%20SettingsOwnerDesktopchristmas%20competitionchosechristmas%20competition-formatted%20chosen.JPG>
This picture embodies my feelings towards christmas. Although this is christmas in general, I feel like my current christmas is going to be interesting and different then usual. But as a rule, I don't get my hopes up, and I don't think I will ever really like christmas. I took them on the 10th.

15. [Nite_Owl] "The Spoils"
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/47856_1135064313.jpg>
Haha, well this is what I see when someone says "Christmas." There are a total of four Hershey's Kisses, a watch, and the wrapper of an Andes chocolate here--it's all about the candy, people! You can't have a good Christmas tree without the candycanes and such, or celebrate without the sweets! So...this is all I'll ever ask for and all I'll ever need on the holidays (^,^) (photo taken 12/19/05, Quartz Hill, Southern California, USA--Christmas without snow is hard to photograph heh)

16.)"The time of waiting" [Captain Rachel Black]

18.Annual Xmas Tree [Lakayana]
<img:stuff/xmas.jpg>
This nice Xmas tree is always kept on a corner of our sitting room every xmas season and each member of the family buys a present and drops it by the tree. On xmas day we all go to the tree and pick any present with your name on it. I once asked my Dad the meaning or why this atificial tree is always kept in our parlor every xmas but he could'nt really explain why. But anytime I see him bring this tree from the store to the parlor and decorating it with lights and gifts, I know it's Xmas season again cos that is the only time this tree is brought out. Now presently the tree is standing in a corner in our parlour meaning "Tis the season" again (The picture was taken today 21/12/2005 with my brothers digital camera and in our Sitting room in Lagos Nigeria)

19. 'Christmas Crèche' - [Kelaria]
<img300*0:stuff/ChristmasCreche.jpg>
This is the crèche given to me by a very special person in my life. I feel it's a very good representation of my feelings towards Christmas. A crèche is a three-dimensional representation of the scene at the birth of Jesus Christ. And, after all, it is Christmas. (Please do click for a larger picture, this small size does not do it justice!)
I used a sepia filter (done on the computer) for this photo and edited in the flame (since the candle hadn't been lit when I took the photo).
Taken and edited December 22nd, 2005.

20."Christmas thoughts" - [Bobolama]

<img300*0:stuff/Bobolama-christmas>
The lonesome time before christmas kills me, before I can truely celebrate Christmas..
(My sister is missing here boyfriend terrible ... )

DISQUALIFIED FOR VOTE SPAMMING!!

Just because it doesn't say 'NO SPAMMING FOR VOTES' in the rules does not mean it is allowed.

22. 'A Smiling Front' - [Solitary Comfort]

<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/42900_1135465411.jpg>

A smiling front on a messy occasion. Isn't that what christmas really is?
Very often, for a lot of people out there, Christmas is a miserable time, a time of arguements and disapointment, as well as having to put up with those pointless visits and conversations with relatives you don't even like. But through it all they put on a 'smiling front'.
I was ill this Christmas - so forgive the lack of Christmas Spirit..
(Please note the position of the tail and the pile of poo)
Taken at home on the 24th/12/05.

23. "Psychedelic Christmas" - [Kyrinn]

<img300*0:stuff/PsychoXmas.png>

Boredom with a camera in my hand is a bad thing, lol. Was taking pictures of the family and while they were busy, I was spinning in my computer chair and snapping pictures for the hell of it. this was the best one.
Taken 12/24/05 in my house.

24. "None shall pass!!" - [Lejia'n]

<img300*0:stuff/spike_xmas_small.jpg>

Our cat Spike is lurking underneath the christmastree, waiting for any foes to come up and try to grab his presents... I wonder what will happen if we try to open them tonight.......
25-12-05

25. 'christmas lights' [Elisha Kelly]

<img300*0:stuff/Elys_xmaslights2.png>

the lights on my christmas tree. Taken tonight the 25/12/05 at 11.30pm, on my brand new digital camera.

Whenever I see pretty flashing multicoloured lights I can't help but think of christmas... Their pretty twinkling in the dark never fails to bring a smile to my face, and a gasp of awe from my little girls :) It just wouldn't feel like christmas without them.

26. together [Ishje]

<img200*300:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/9867_1135686224.jpg>

25 december 2005, christmas, for me it is all about being together sharing a few day's of happyness and joy, this picture showes both, the hands for being together and the christmastree for happyness.

27. 'Snow In The Evening' [Rice]

<img250*0://elftown.lysator.liu.se/img/photo/87488_1135699091.jpg>

I was in Lapland last year, January time, the real place for Christmas. The calmness of this picture, the emotion it can not be put into words.

28. "Ice sculpture" - [merlina]
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/14954_1135722923.jpg>

This is a picture of an ice sculpture of one of the wise men from the east. And with the christmas trees on the background it really reminds me of christmas. It's a cold season but it brings people together. I made this picture in Holland, Leiden, it was on a place with many ice sculptures. date: 27-12-05

29. "The two sides of christmas" - [-tsukasa-]
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/98554_1135729019.jpg>

I took the 2 pictures on my trip along the west coast of canada and the U.S. The celebration one in Leavensworth and the lake in Lake Chelan national park(You should go there one time). And I think this represents the season because the season has 2 sides. You can be peacefull and one with nature and you can be jolly and celebrate. date 27-12-05 pictures taken 13-12-04 "Leavensworth" 14-12-04 "Lake Chelan national park"

30. "The Christmas Eve Tradition" by [Master Fio]
<img300*0:stuff/chrissy1.jpg>
(Note: This picture looks a lot better when larger)
This was taken on christmas eve on our annual christmas light gazing stroll.
It's funny how just a short walk can get you in the christmas spirit.
I was going to use an picture of my cousins and siblings on christmas day but since it is summer here I thought it might not look very christmasy to everyone else. If you get what I mean?

31. "When all else fails" [Harmonie's mommie!]
<img300*0:stuff/ashleigh0011eg.jpg>
I think this picture represents The season in two forms, Traditional, and The Breath of Life... If we celebrate a human life on this day, then Human life must play an important part in this season.. This photo wasnt messed with at all, this is how it was taken. I think it was the air rushing around the tree and across the camera lens.(note, you may have to click the link)

32. "City of Lights" [thoughtfox]
<img300*0:stuff/IMG_0650.jpg>
This laser show turns night into day. It is then, when every building is thriving with life, that you know that the festive season is here. Taken in Hong Kong, 21/12/2005, just after 20:00

33. "The lights of London" [shotokan_gal]
<img300*0:stuff/oxfordstreet5.jpg>
Last minute frantic shopping is a common occurrence in the days leading up to Christmas, but when rushing around the stores you can't help but know it's the season!
Taken 20/12/05, Oxford street, London.

34. "Reflections" [stuffAEAmade]
<img300*0:stuff/dks_tistheseason.jpg>
The days leading up to the new year is a time to pause and reflect on the one that has past. What better place to do so than in the pristine silence of a winter wonderland?
Taken 2005.12.30 outside my house.

35. "My Xmas Tree" [Shjahjdahdvwa]
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/42991_1135991461.jpg>
It was a pretty sad day because me and my two sister had an argument with my parents. They went to sleep and we stayed quiet till it was 00:00. This picture was took in 25-12-2005 and the tree was the only joy of that day.

36. "New Years Eve" [Markk!]
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/stuff/pappaa.jpg>
It`s my dad, baking oil balls.. I think it`s a good shot of this season, because this year is allmost over, and when we in The Netherlands celebrate that, we make oil balls lighten fireworks and have happiness..
Taken on 32-12-05 At 12:20, in our barn

37. "Traditional Christmas" - [Leara]
<img300*0:stuff/C%3AAmandacontestchristmas%200852.jpg>
I think this is a good representation of the season because it includes all, or most, of the traditional elements of Christmas. You have your tree, fake as it may be, pretty twinkling lights, presents from loved ones, and church, or course(yes, that little building is a church). I think the overall feel of the image is calming, and the lights look almost like little sprites. Taken December 24th, in my living room. :P

38. "The Christmas Puppy" - [Paz]
<img300*0:stuff/christmas%20puppy.jpg>
The present that every little kid wants for christmas, a new puppy. When a child runs down the stairs on christmas morning to see a new puppy waiting for them. Christmas also would not be the same without your loving pet beside you (for all those pet lovers) Taken after the holidays, with her christmas bow annually placed on her to celebrate not only the holidays but her birthday. It took me awhile to get her to sit down.

39. "Thee Baby's First Christmas" - [Artsieladie]
<img:stuff/1st300TheeBabysChristmasWpoem.psd.jpg>
Every year I have to set up the Nativity Scene. It's not an expensive one, but then this isn't what Christmas is about! It's ALL about Thee Baby Jesus who made possible the First Christmas & EVERY ONE...thereafter! I took this picture with my daughter's new digital camera she received for Christmas. The date taken, 30/12/2005, I left in the photo. Taken in my living room as the center of my village in my home! The larger version is in my house on Elftown. :))

Happy New Years

2005-12-02 [Yuriona]: Yay! Excellent first entry! :D

2005-12-02 [Skydancer]: I started to put the yule greeting but then I saw the one shot limit so I decided to do a pure photograph instead. :) Photomanipulation in real life, chuckle..

2005-12-02 [Yuriona]: Yes, sadly I have to limit entries to one or I'll be swamped with entries! :O

2005-12-02 [Skydancer]: true, I know in this case I would probably have done three, since I did quite a few shots in the set. :)

2005-12-02 [Yuriona]: Well, we'll see how much interest in this contest we get. I may allow two entries if there isn't a lot of interest in it.

2005-12-02 [Master Fio]: I think im just gonna put all the pics i take on a wiki and ask people to tell me which one i should enter. I hate choosing.

2005-12-02 [Master Fio]: Then again with an entry like that first one I might not even bother entering. I think im out of my league here.

2005-12-02 [Skydancer]: Never let the work of another artist affect your own journey. Put your work out there and let it live and grow and get stronger. Its the only way you will ever get your work in front of the world. And that, ultimately is sort of the point, not competitions, but rather synergies and community and sharing the muses.

2005-12-03 [Iseld]: *raises eyebrows* hehe

2005-12-03 [Iseld]: my cookies are greeeeeen :D

2005-12-03 [Jitter]: oooh I will Enter! (As if I wouldn't the contest junkie me... :p)

2005-12-05 [IX.Dollface]: Ohh...yays for another contest...haha

2005-12-05 [Kuruni]: cool contest.....now...what will i create?  Can i advertise my own contest? if not i understand....

2005-12-05 [Yuriona]: Normally spamming wikis is frowned upon but since you asked first I'll allow it. ^_^ LOL!

2005-12-05 [Ihsahn]: I hope my entry is good

2005-12-05 [Seany.]: to let you all know! everyones entry is so cooool!

2005-12-05 [Nocternity S.]: i think you forgot the dates....

2005-12-05 [Ihsahn]: fixed and thanks

2005-12-05 [Yuriona]: Hee hee hee... nice place holder Jitterbug. ;)

2005-12-05 [Yuriona]: Actually... I just realised those are Christmas lights in the photo. THat could almost be an entry. That's hilarious! LMAO!

2005-12-05 [Jitter]: Haha Okay if you think so I'll enter that ^_^ I wasn't sure if it was fitting the theme enough :p

2005-12-06 [Yuriona]: It's definitely unique and I know many of us have faced the horror of untangling and testing tree lights. ;)

2005-12-06 [Master Fio]: AHHHHH NOT THE DREADED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!!!

2005-12-06 [Iseld]: i always hid during that part! hehe

2005-12-06 [lady nytmare]: Love the entries. When I find something Xmassy, i'll enter too. Eventually... :p

2005-12-06 [melperi]: oo...good theme... i guess i have to go take some photos.

2005-12-06 [Jitter]: Whoa I was about to tell you you're mad [DarkJenni] but I noticed that you didn't make that snow lion ^_^ Great entry though!

2005-12-06 [Skydancer]: that is one really really BIG cat.. chuckle.. Can you imagine the work those folk put into their sculptures? Wow.

2005-12-06 [Jitter]: And I can't even sculpt with clay o.O

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: I can sculpt in iron and steel, but that is way out my league.. :)

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Who is that in the picture [DarkJenni]?

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: She is. :)

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Then how can it be her photo? In the rules it states: "Photographs must be taken by Elftowners and posted here by the original photographer." Dont mean to sound like a bitch, I'm just trying to be fair and help enforce the rules.

2005-12-07 [Ihsahn]: maybe its one of the automated ones were you tell it to take a picture and it takes a picture of you, like a time limit

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: Well, if I hand my camera to a person at a touristy place and ask them to take a photo of me at the "whatever exciting scenic" spot, it is still my photo.

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: Actually, for that matter, the photo I submitted, has me in it.

2005-12-07 [Leara]: Yes, the picture itself is yours, but the photography of it isn't. Though it's yours and you can use it where you please, you wouldn't have been active in the artistic portion of how it was taken other than posing pretty and smiling, for example: My best friend wants me to take a photo of her, with her camera...it's her picture, but she has no right to use it in a contest, however, I do, since I was the one who took the photo.

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: Well, perhaps, though that can get to be a very grey area. I do this for a living, of sorts, and I have assistants that do some of my shooting from time to time, but it is my studio, my equiptment and they work for me. So everything they might do, actually, legally, is mine. Most of the works I have in my galleries, and stock in fact have been taken of me, by me, so that can really get to be a very grey area indeed. chuckle..

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Exactly [Leara].

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Legally, they are yours, but that doesnt mean you can enter them in a contest as YOUR work. Techinically they are the work of your assistants! Like [Leara] said you werent active in the artistic portion of how it was taken other than posing pretty and smiling.

2005-12-07 [Leara]: Actually, in Skydancer's case, it's a little difficult, in the case of a studio setting, they would be his if he's the one says take it from this angle, in this exact spot with this lighting...etc. But in the case of [DarkJenni]'s photo, thats not the case, and isn't her photography.

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: I am sorry, but I beg to differ. I design all the sets, compositions, and shots. The assistants are there to do what I tell them to do and to learn from me. They are not in anyway involved in any decisions at all. They are simply extensions of my own mind, like any other tool. You are making invalid assumptions that are not necessarily true.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Yes, I agree though that [Skydancer]'s case has more gray area...

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: It's really up to [Yuriona] as the organizer of this contest.

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: To make matters very clear however, the shot I submitted was taken, created and modeled totally by myself, with no other human assistance. Programmable cameras do have their uses. :)

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: With lots of practice, you can do a lot in the ten seconds the self timer gives you. And with the addition of a remote trigger, you have even more leeway, though it does take a lot of planning and composition.

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: I personally have no problem with either photo. I happen to be well acquainted with your work Skydancer so I know that the photo submitted is yours both creatively and legally. I also have no problem with images submitted by ETers who are in the photo provided that they have permission to use the photo. For instance, if a photo of a member posing with Santa Claus is entered, I would still consider it their photo since they would have to pay for that image. If [DarkJenni] had a friend take that photo then the friend gave her the photo, I consider it her photo.provided that the friend had no problem with her posting it. Since she is the one posing, I doubt the taker would object.

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: However [Leara], if you feel that strongly in this matter, you as a guard have the right to question [DarkJenni] on the subject, especially if you feel the photo is stolen. If other entrants of this contest have an issue with that entry, I will certainly look into the matter. In the spirit of this festive season though, I am willing to be a little more lenient as long as there is no outright theft. I appreciate your concern but please in the future, consult me on the matter first before questioning the validity of entries in a contest where you have no jurisdiction.

2005-12-07 [Leara]: I only stated my opinion since the matter was already being discussed, since the title of the contest is photography and not photo. There is artistically a difference. But it is your contest, so what you say goes.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: I dont mean to be a pest, but you did take off a photo from the last competition that someone's dad gave them permission to use. I do understand Skydancer's points, but even if someone's friend took the picture it wouldnt be fair to give them the prize for the artistic photography of their friend... I just feel like you should be more consistant with this.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: And [Leara] is right. it is a photography competition. Not a competition to see who can post the best photo they happen to have lying around, no matter who took it. That doesnt seem fair to me.

2005-12-07 [Leara]: BTW, I wasn't against Skydancer's image, it may have sounded that way since he was in on the discussion. My concern was only towards Morbid's.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Same here.

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: Did either of you read my comment about being more lenient this time in the spirit of the season? If you have a problem with the way I am running this contest then by all means, take it for yourselves. I do not appreciate those who have neither contributed nor offered to assist in this version of the contest to come in and question my authority on the matter. Your opinions are noted, you needn't worry about that. I will remember well how both of you behaved here.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: I just still think it's not very fair..... but okay... and I am currently working on my entry. I know you want to be lenient, but I just want things to be truly fair for everyone.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: I am not questioning your authority.

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: Wasnt I the one who said "It's really up to [Yuriona] as the organizer of this contest." ?

2005-12-07 [Leara]: "I will remember well how both of you behaved here. " - As I have said, it was my OPINION, and I also said what you say goes...I wasn't arguing with you. Excuse me for freedom of speech to express an opinion, only because it was already being discussed. I'm sorry to say, but you are over reacting and taking the situation out of proportion.

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: Yes, I am quite familiar with your opinion Leara. Thank you for offering it. And yes Kelaria, I know what you said just as I know what was said after that point. I was merely replying to the continued comments. And don't worry, such things are taken into account when the entries are voted on. Trust me, it isn't that hard to decide between a 'just because' entry and one where the participant took the time and effort to plan out their entry. I already see at least three entries that fall into that category, including the one in question. ;)

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: The 'half-assed' category that is. ;) You may be sorry Leara but I'm not. :P

2005-12-07 [Iseld]: hmm...this is way too much drama for a fun little competition on elftown, i'm sorry, maybe i missed the part in the rules where there was a huge prize and artistic recognition for any who win! :P

2005-12-07 [Iseld]: (in other words, lighten up guys...tis the season right?)

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: {starts gathering candies for a holiday chocolate snowball food fight.} :)

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: *makes holiday cookies (just about the only cooking I am capable of XD lol)*

2005-12-07 [Skydancer]: {Is slated to make Darth Molten Chocolate cakes, peanut fudge brownies, rolled oat chocolate chip cookies, Chai Banana Cake, Chocolate swirled peanut butter fudge cheesecake brownies, a very large slow roasted pulled pork shoulder, and a couple of veggie casseroles.} sigh...

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: I love good food :D and yummy treats!

2005-12-07 [Iseld]: hey yuriona! want some chai banana cake? or some peanut fudge brownies? skydancer seems to be quite the baker... :D

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: No thank you. I'm quite hooked on the Darth Molten Cake. ;) And yes, there was far too much drama in here for my tastes too. Then again, drama seems to follow a certain ET member around I've noticed. *shakes head*

2005-12-07 [Jitter]: /me invites everyone to The old wiki Candy shop for candy

2005-12-07 [Kelaria]: I hope you're not talking about me Yuri... I do have feelings :( ... the reason I ask is because someone who used to pick on me a lot said the same thing about me in order to hurt my feelings (it worked, big time)... so I just want to be clear... is it me you're talking about?

2005-12-07 [Yuriona]: No, not you. :P I think I would have said something about that long before now if it was you. *does neener neener dance*
